Dynasty Fantasy Football Glossary: Every Term Explained
The complete reference guide for dynasty fantasy football terminology — from ADP to waiver wire, every term you'll encounter explained clearly.
Dynasty fantasy football has its own vocabulary. This glossary covers every major term with clear definitions and practical context.
A
ADP (Average Draft Position) — The average pick at which a player is selected across all dynasty drafts. When ADP diverges significantly from value, it signals the player is overvalued or undervalued by the market.
Age Curve — The typical career arc of a player at a given position. RBs peak earliest (22-26) and decline fastest. WRs have longer windows (24-28 peak). QBs can produce into their mid-30s. TEs peak later than other skill positions (25-29).
All-Play Record — A record showing how a team would have done playing every other team each week. Often used as a playoff seeding tiebreaker and is a better indicator of roster quality than head-to-head record.
Auction Draft — A draft format where managers bid salary cap dollars to acquire players rather than selecting in pick order.
B
Best Ball — A format where your lineup sets automatically each week using your highest-scoring players. Rewards roster depth and boom/bust upside over consistent-but-capped players.
Buy Low — Acquiring a player below their true dynasty value, typically by targeting players who underperformed recently or are undervalued for situational reasons.
C
Cap Space — In salary cap leagues, available budget after accounting for contracted players.

Contract / Keeper Contract — In keeper or contract leagues, a binding agreement to retain a player at a specific salary for a defined number of years.
D
Dead Cap — In salary cap leagues, cap space consumed by a released or traded player whose contract penalty extends beyond their roster time.

Effective Team Count — In multi-copy leagues, the effective scarcity-equivalent team count for dynasty value purposes.
F
FAAB (Free Agent Acquisition Budget) — A seasonal budget for acquiring free agents via blind bidding. Prevents the "best team gets best waivers" problem of priority systems.
Franchise Tag — In some leagues, a tag allowing a manager to keep a player beyond normal keeper eligibility, usually limited to once per team.
Free Agent — A player not on any roster, available via waiver wire or FAAB bidding.

Handcuff — The backup to an elite running back, valuable primarily for insurance if the starter gets injured.

L

R
Rebuilding — A strategy focused on accumulating picks and young players for future competitiveness rather than winning now.
